Why the HEB Mid-Cities Need a Different Camera Plan

Hurst, Euless and Bedford sit shoulder to shoulder in northeast Tarrant County, wedged between Fort Worth and DFW International Airport and tied together by the shared Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district. Locals just call the whole area the Mid-Cities, and from a security standpoint it behaves like one continuous neighborhood rather than three separate towns.

That matters because the Mid-Cities do not look like the newer master-planned suburbs further south and west. Most of the housing stock here went up between the 1960s and the 1990s, lots are smaller and closer together, alley access behind homes is common, and decades of tree growth means mature canopy that blocks sightlines a builder never anticipated. Add one of the highest concentrations of apartments and duplexes in Tarrant County, and a camera layout copied from a Southlake estate simply does not transfer.

The practical takeaway for Mid-Cities property owners is that camera placement here is driven by access points and approach paths, not acreage. A typical HEB home has a front door, a garage, a side gate and an alley-facing back fence, and every one of those is reachable on foot in under a minute. Four to six well-aimed cameras usually cover a Mid-Cities property more effectively than a dozen cameras scattered without a plan.

Retrofitting Older Mid-Cities Homes Without Tearing Up Walls

The single most common question we get in Hurst and Bedford is whether hardwired cameras can go into a 40 or 50 year old brick ranch home without destroying the walls. The answer is yes, and it comes down to using the paths the house already gives you.

On most Mid-Cities homes the run goes up into the attic, across the joists, and back down through the soffit to each camera location. The soffit is the key. It gives clean, shaded, protected mounting points under the eaves, and it lets us drop Cat6 down to a camera without ever cutting into a finished interior wall. When we do need to pass through exterior brick, we drill through the mortar joint rather than the brick face, which is both stronger and fully repairable later.

Older homes in this area often still have abandoned RG6 coax from old analog cable or satellite service running to useful spots on the exterior. Where that cabling is intact and lands somewhere we actually want a camera, it can be repurposed with PoE-over-coax adapters instead of pulling new line, which saves labor and keeps the install cleaner.

Being minutes from DFW International Airport shapes the Mid-Cities in a way that shows up directly in security needs. A meaningful share of Euless and Bedford residents work for airlines, ground operations, freight carriers or hotels tied to the airport, which means irregular shifts and multi-day absences are normal rather than occasional.

For a household that is regularly away for three or four days at a stretch, a few things become non-negotiable. Recording has to be local and continuous, so footage exists whether or not anyone remembered to renew a subscription. Remote app access has to be reliable enough that you can actually check in from a hotel in another time zone. And motion alerts have to be tuned tightly, because a camera that pings your phone every time a car passes on Harwood Road will be muted by day two, which defeats the entire purpose.
